My name is DeeAnne Bagley and I have been employed with the Arnold Law Firm for almost 3 years.  As a whole, the firm participates in walks to raise funds for community programs, such as the Walk for Thought, Race for the Cure, and Run to Feed the Hungry.  Recently, the firm has encouraged the employees to get involved in the community or charities on a more personal level.  They want us to pick something we are passionate about and where we can make a difference.

Bruiser BagleyMy passion is animals.  This is my dog, Bruiser Bagley. I have always been an animal lover, dogs in particular.  So when the firm gave me this opportunity to get involved, I jumped in with both feet.  But how can I help?  I started with “liking” the Villalobos Rescue Center on Facebook.  Villalobos Rescue Center is the largest pitbull rescue.  It is also where they film the Animal Planet show “Pitbulls and Parolees.”  Needless to say, their fan base is huge.  One day while I was surfing VRC’s page, I noticed a picture of an extremely emaciated pitbull.  His name is Patrick.  Patrick was starved to near death by his owner in New Jersey.  Patrick’s story moved me to tears, pick up the telephone, and donate $20 to his medical bills.  The people at Garden State Veterinary Specialists were so thankful for my meager $20 donation.  I am happy to report that Patrick made a full recovery and is thriving in his new surroundings.

Patrick’s story inspired our own firm charity, “Mutts of the Month.”  Each month I scour through numerous Facebook stories and pick one dog to sponsor.  During the month, I beg and plead with the employees of the firm to donate money.  The money is spent on supplies or gift cards to help the caregivers provide for the dogs specific needs.  In the past, we have sent food, blankets, toys, and gift cards.

By following Patrick’s story, I have come across numerous dogs that need help.  More than not, these dogs are neglected and abused by their owners.  It is absolutely gut wrenching to read what these animals have gone through.  On the bright side, there are so many kind people that donate their time, money, and homes to these severely neglected animals.  With their help, the dogs are able to recover from their physical pain and receive the love they so desperately deserve.

As of late, I have been inspired to help the dogs in my neighborhood through volunteering at the Placer County SPCA.  In the past months, I have attended 3 classes at the SPCA and have completed 2 levels, which allows me to enter the cages and socialize with the dogs.  At the SPCA, the dogs are taught to greet potential adopters, along with other various commands.  I hope to pass my third level soon, which will grant me more access to work with the dogs on a one-on-one level.  My hope is to become a dog walker and possible trainer.
